Following an exciting competition last year, the World Surf League (WSL) is proud to announce the return of the Los Cabos Open of Surf held at the high performance righthand pointbreak of Zippers. The Women’s Qualifying Series (QS) 6000, Men’s and Women’s Junior Tour are back for the 2016 edition of this great event held on the pristine shores of Costa Azul in Baja California Sur.

Contest Executive Producer Uli Torre of Boardwalk Producciones expressed his excitement about the return of this event and is looking forward to another successful year. Working alongside the local supporters, his team wasted no time in getting the contest set for this year following 2015’s action and is set for another great year with its competitively rich history.

“After an exciting week of action wrapped up with Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) finishing brilliantly over Silvana Lima (BRA), the team at Boardwalk Producciones went straight back to work planning the 2016 event,” Torre said. “This wave has been the most popular surf break in the Los Cabos area for many years. In the 80s and early 90s, the world’s best surfers including Kelly Slater, Christian Fletcher, and Shane Beschen, came to participate in the Herbie Fletcher Cabo Classic.”

Los Cabos holds a lot of beautiful scenery, something that has helped build an incredible local surf scene. Holding a music festival and many other activities alongside the Los Cabos Open of Surf, this year’s additions will be ones to take notice of after a great turn out last year.

“In addition to the surfing action this year, the world famous Mexican dance music act, Kinky, has been announced as the festival stage headliner for June 11 and Hawaiian reggae infused rock-band Pepper are booked for June 10,” Torre added. “The buzz is building surrounding the Music Festival portion of the Los Cabos Open of Surf and with over 10,000 fans in attendance at last year’s festival, we’re expecting record-breaking crowds in 2016.”

Now CEO of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, Ruben Reachi has been with the board since July of last year and saw the impact of last year’s event unfold in the months that followed. Reachi is excited to maintain key sponsorship for this contest as a major focal point of the year.

“What better place to gather some of the most talented surfers than along our beautiful coastline,” said Reachi. “This year marks the fourth annual event, one of the largest surf competitions and music festivals in Mexico and Latin America, and we are looking forward to welcoming both competitors and spectators from around the world to our beaches.”

As one of the key voices in last year’s event, Chris Cote is back on board and helping this event keep its place among the QS’s top destinations. Working with Torre and Abe Juarez, Cote couldn’t imagine a better place to host a competition of this caliber.

“The guys at Boardwalk Producciones do all the heavy lifting—they really are the best event production team in all of Mexico,” Cote said. “The dynamic duo of Abe Juarez and Uli Torre along with their crew have created an incredible event from the ground up and I’m just fortunate that they’ve let me get involved to help spread the word this event. Our aim is to show the world how incredible not only the talent level of our Women and Junior competitors, but also spotlight Los Cabos which is truly a world class destination for surfing among all the other activities it’s already famous for.”
